The History of Virago Society
Virago Society was started in November 1985. The original members were Babette, Cathy, Josie. June, Kathy, Sue M, and Sue T. B joined a month later when she moved to town.
The Society’s name was chosen at an early meeting, based on the following: Excerpt from Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady by Florence King: “Virago has come to mean 'bitch' because people prefer to forget what it really means. The first definition the dictionary gives is the right one: ‘a woman of great stature, strength and courage who is not feminine in the conventional ways.’ It comes from the Latin vir meaning male.” Hence, the motorcycle (see photo below) named after us! |
A Holiday Virago Poem:
A POEM FOR THE BOOKCLUB by JoAnn Kranninger Twas the Holiday Book Party And all thru the club, Not a creature was stirring, So we ordered some grub. The stories were read and Discussed so intently, With B providing the minutes Oh-so gently! The gifts were laid out Like a Reader’s Buffet All the members thought, “What will be mine at the end of the day?” Let’s toast to the last year, The laughter, the tears. Our next year will be even better – Read on and Cheers! |
